Speech therapy cost and insurance
You want to know what this will cost before you pick up the phone. That is fair. Here are our rates and the insurance plans we take, all in one place.
Our rates
- Phone consultation, 15 minutes
- Free
- Evaluation, 1 hour
- $250
- Therapy session, 30 to 45 minutes
- $125
These are our private-pay rates. If we're in network with your plan, your cost depends on your plan's copay, coinsurance, and deductible.
Insurance we're in network with
Virginia Medicaid and its managed care plans
- Virginia Medicaid
- Anthem HealthKeepers Plus
- UnitedHealthcare Community Plan
- Aetna Better Health
- Sentara Community Plan
Commercial plans and Tricare
- Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield
- Cigna
- UnitedHealthcare
- Kaiser Permanente
- Tricare
Being in network doesn't always mean every service is covered. Coverage for feeding and myofunctional therapy depends on the plan, and some plans need a referral or a prior authorization first. It's worth checking with the plan before the first visit, and we can help with what to ask.
Not on the list?
Private pay is always welcome. We will give you a superbill, which is a detailed receipt you can send to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Reimbursement is not guaranteed, but a lot of families find it worth asking.
Families in Illinois
If you're seeing us online from Illinois, you'll pay privately at the same rates, and we'll give you a superbill to send to your insurance. Reimbursement isn't guaranteed. See online speech therapy.
How to check your coverage
-
Find your member ID card.
-
Send us your plan name using the coverage form, or call (804) 420-2273.
-
We'll let you know whether we're in network with your plan and what to ask them.
-
If you'd like to check yourself, call the member services number on your card and ask about outpatient speech therapy, feeding, or myofunctional therapy, and whether you need a referral.
That's it. You don't have to figure out the insurance language on your own.
Home visits farther out
Private-pay home visits have a travel fee based on drive time from our base, measured with Google Maps when we schedule:
| Drive time | Travel fee |
|---|---|
| Within 20 minutes | No travel fee |
| 20 to 35 minutes | $25 per session |
| 35 to 50 minutes | $40 per session |
| More than 50 minutes | By request |
We'll always tell you the fee before you book.
Cancellation policy
Please give us at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. For families not covered by Virginia Medicaid, a missed session without notice has a $50 no-show fee, and a fee may also apply to cancellations made with less than 24 hours' notice.
If your child is covered by Virginia Medicaid or one of its managed care plans, you won't be charged a fee for a missed or late-canceled session.
Questions families ask
Does Virginia Medicaid cover speech therapy for kids?
Virginia Medicaid and its managed care plans may cover speech therapy for children when it's medically necessary. We're in network with Virginia Medicaid and four of its managed care plans, so we can talk through your child's coverage with you.
Is feeding or myofunctional therapy covered?
It depends on the plan. Check with the insurance company before the first visit, or send us the plan name and we'll help with what to ask.
Do you take Tricare?
Yes. We're in network with Tricare.
What does the evaluation include?
A one-hour visit that looks at your child's speech, language, feeding, or oral motor skills (depending on your concern), and a plan for what comes next. The price is the same for every kind of evaluation.
How long is a session?
Sessions run 30 to 45 minutes. Session length depends on your child's age, attention, and goals, and younger kids often do best with shorter sessions.
